🤡 Happy April Fools! Here’s the Worst Career Advice I’ve Ever Given
It’s April Fools’ Day, which felt like the perfect excuse to reshare one of the most ridiculous videos I’ve made!
It’s called “6 Guaranteed Ways to (Never) Get Music Work!,” and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like:
A sarcastic six-step system for ensuring your music dreams crash and burn in spectacular fashion.
Here’s a quick rundown of the worst advice I could possibly give:
-
❌ Never evolve—stay in your comfort zone forever.
-
❌ Always go solo—because clearly, collaboration is overrated.
-
❌ Be completely disorganized—just wait for inspiration to strike.
-
❌ Resist all change—tools, trends, workflows… who needs them?
-
❌ Make music just for money—forget joy or creative fulfillment.
-
❌ Avoid your audience—keep your music in a vacuum where no one can reach it.
Now, obviously this is a joke.
Most composers know not to follow any of this…
But here’s the thing…we still fall into some of these traps without realizing it.
-
We isolate ourselves because collaboration feels vulnerable.
-
We avoid structure because it feels restrictive.
-
We resist new tools because learning them feels overwhelming.
-
We write music we don’t care about because we think it’s what we should do.
And before we know it, we’re stuck—even if we’re doing “all the right things.”
So yeah, the video’s a joke.
But it also holds up a mirror to some of the habits and fears that quietly shape our careers!
🎥 If you need a laugh (or a tiny existential nudge), here’s the video:

And if you’ve been trying to avoid some of these traps but still feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to go next…
That’s exactly why I created the Composer Odyssey Membership.
It’s where I help composers get feedback on their music, build momentum in their careers, and stay focused on what actually matters…without doing it all alone.
